The Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has attacked the base of the 324 Light Infantry Regiment in Namtu, northern Shan State, in a night raid, according to the TNLA and other sources.
The TNLA said a government soldier was killed and a gun and ammunition were seized while none of its troops were wounded in the fighting on Sunday morning.
A Natmu police officer said: “It is true that the fighting occurred for about an hour. We have no information on casualties yet. We have tightened the security in the town. There has been fighting in Namtu before but the armed groups didn’t fire at the government base.”
Residents report regular clashes between the TNLA and government troops.
“We heard gunfire from the army base at about 1am but we didn’t dare to go out to watch,” a female witness said.
The TNLA, which has not signed a ceasefire with the government, claimed the attack was in retaliation for an earlier attack by the army.
